Guest Post: Super Fancy Sugar Scrub

Today we have a lovely DIY Tutorial from the Super Fancy Chef herself, Rhiana Moussa.

This just might hurt a little…
SO. You’ve been hanging out in the sun all summer, flaunting your perfect pedicure glazed with “Teeny Bikini” or “Go Overboard” Essie polish, accented by your stunning T Strap Sandal tan.
You haven’t been drinking nearly enough water and you may have forgotten to reapply your SPF 30 once or twice.
I just need you to mix a couple things from your kitchen together (If these items aren’t already in your pantry, head to the market and get up on this game…) and then rub them all over yourself.

¾ Cup Raw Sugar
2 TB Coconut Oil
2 TB Almond Oil
2 TB Lavender Flowers
1 TS Rose Water
1 or 2 drops of Rose Essential Oil

Directions:
Once you mix everything together, take it into the shower with you and slough away. Concentrating on the knees, elbows and ankles. The sugar is gritty and your skin will turn red, you’ll want to cry a little and you might wonder how you will ever be able to survive child birth if you can’t even make it through a simple sugar scrub. You will endure. I never miss scrubbing my hips and thighs. Somehow this scrub temporarily banishes cellulite, giving you photo-shopped thighs for about two hours… if you ever find yourself in the need. Roses and Lavender definitely puts you in a mood too. Smooth skin and an exotic aroma - you’re in trouble.

Feel free to experiment with different scents, like rosemary and mint, or cinnamon. Used coffee grounds and ginger are delightful, but will do damage to your drain, so use that one outside if you can. Enjoy!!

Benefits of Coconut Oil:
Coconut Oil is heaven sent; it prevents destructive free-radical formation and provides protection against them. It can help to keep the skin from developing liver spots, and other blemishes caused by aging and over exposure to sunlight.  It helps to keep connective tissues strong and supple so that the skin doesn't sag and wrinkle.  The small molecular structure of coconut oil allows for easy absorption through the skin. Coconut oil also aids in removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, making the skin smoother. Your skin will become more evenly toned and textured. Check out this super smart post with a million reasons why you need more coconut oil in your life.

Rose Water:
Rose water is a natural, gentle and lusciously fragrant toner for skin. It is an anti-inflammatory agent and will reduce swelling and redness. So it is perfect after a little too much sun. I swipe a cotton ball soaked in rose water on my face before bed, because… I am a lady… and my grandma says I have to. It is also the best make up brush cleaner. EVER.

Almond Oil:
Almond oil contains vitamin E in abundance which is known as the food for the skin. Vitamin E protects our skin from damaging ultraviolet light, preventing cell damage. Sweet almond oil has refreshing fragrance which has positive impacts on your senses and has been known to reduce stress. Combine it with lavender and you got a knock out, one-two punch.

Guest Post: DIY Razor Back Tank

Check out this awesome tutorial from Teal Jensen, a recent Nursing School grad, super talented painter, native San Diego surfer girl, and overall creative genius. Thanks for sharing, Tealita!

I’m from a town that takes lots of pride in celebrating their Independence. So this
year when the 4th rolled around and I had nothing to sport my Patriotism, I decided
to make something.
This idea is a great, not only for the 4th, but for summery tops
and workout tanks as well. After hours of roaming the floors of Forever 21 and
H&M, I found an oversized red-white-and-blue striped tee. Here’s how I went from
an oversized men’s tee to a cute fitted razor back tank:

You’ll need:
1) Any old tee
2) Pair of Scissors

Step 1) Grab an oversized tee. Funky Thrift store finds work great for this.

Step 2) Cut off the crew neck, sleeves, and 1-2” of the bottom seam.

Step 3) Turn the shirt to the back and cut in the sides of the straps to create a “razor back" appearance.

Step 4) Then cut a "V" down from the neck on the back of the tee.

Step 5) Take the bottom piece of the shirt you cut and remove the seam. Do this
by cutting and pulling the thread until you are left with one long stretchy piece of fabric.

Step 6) Pull and stretch the fabric – the longer the better, but make sure it doesn’t break. It should end up looking like a long spaghetti noodle.

Step 7) With the noodley fabric tie a knot 2” above the base of the “V” on the back.
Wrap the fabric around the straps, until you completely cover the bottom 2” of the
straps. Then tie two knots to secure the fabric to the straps.

Voila! You can now sport this top to your next yoga class, the beach, or any other festivities you have this summer!

I (Tanya) am featured over at Lauren's design blog- Pearls, Poppies, Pinkies Up  this week. I shared a garage sale Window Pane makeover that I did. Lauren is one of my dearest friends from Cal Poly, and has always inspired me with her watercolor paintings, vintage fashion, thoughtful gifts, and home design. Lauren, her husband Matt, and their rascal dog Shelby have recently moved to Denver and I can't wait to visit them for a Colorado adventure!

Our Friends: Paper Cranes Installation

Betsi is a visionary, adventurer, coffee expert, zumba-er, and sweet sweet friend. She recently moved into a temporary apartment, and wanted to spruce up her room. So she turned to the materials on hand, and created a beautiful Paper Crane installation made out of newspaper, fishing line, and push pins. That is what I love about crafts, that you don't have to have fancy materials or perfect vision, just a touch of creativity, and poof- a masterpiece!
